Programme profile
The programme provides students with an understanding of the fundamental concepts of Irish and international Law, combined with French literature and language, including advanced oral and written work, knowledge of culture and institutions, and analytical and interpretive skills.
The two distinct streams of learning are integrated by modules such as Introduction to Civil Legal Systems, Elements of French Civil Law, Jurisprudence, Literature and Language (as part of Jurisprudence course), the History of Ideas, Justice and Freedom, Cultural Studies, Language & Interpretation. These modules are specifically tailored to the needs of Law and French students, including, in particular, an exploration of the Civil Law system, which is the system of Law found in mainland Europe.
The BCL (Law and French) degree comprises compulsory modules together with a range of elective modules form which students can choose their subjects of interest.

Year 1: Introduction to Legal Systems; Constitutional Law; Law of Contract; Criminal Law; Legal Writing; Foundation course in Written & Oral French; Law, Language and Literature; Introduction to French Studies
Year 2: Law of the European Union; Law of Property ;Law of Torts; Elements of French Civil Law; Advanced French Language; The history of Ideas in France: Justice & Freedom; Electives
Year 3: Third year is spent studying approved courses in Law, Language and Culture at a host institution in France.
Year 4: Advanced Use of French;Language and Interpretation; Literary Seminar;Structure and Varieties of Contemporary French; Electives
Entry Requirements
Students must present six subjects of which two must be at grade C or above at Advanced GCE (A-Level. Others must be at least at grade C or above on GCSE or Advanced Subsidiary GCE (AS) papers. The six subjects above must include:English, Mathematics and a language other than English.
